Lovely couple

Evangelos the sculptor.

Once upon a time a sculptor named Evangelos lived in Cyprus.
Is was extremely hot and he went to the azure blue bay to cool down.
When he arrived there, he saw the goddess Afrodite bathing.
He was shocked by her breathtaking beauty
and fell desperately in love with her.
He adored her from that first moment and when he came home
he brougth her daily sacrifices and begged her to come to him,
to share his live with him.
The lovely Afrodite smiled sweet but stayed in her temple.
A goddes can never have such a relationship with a human being !

He was crazy about her with such a strong desire that he bougth
A piece of marble. He started sculpturing.
So long, that he had captured the smile of Afrodite in stone.
Around that smile he created cheeks, lashes, eyes, lips, hair,
a chin, ears and a neck. The chisels exposed slim arms,
an unequalled body, tender arched hips and long graceful legs.
He worked uninterrupted at the statue and polished the marble.
It couldn’t be better or smoother. It has a supernatural gleam.
He stopped because the scupture was perfect now
and he didn’t want to ruin it.

Evangelos looked at what he had created ; his own perfect view of love
So confidential and also so strange.
It looks as if it was living and longing for him.
Stretching her arms begging for him. He couldn’t believe his eyes.
On fire he huged the lovely statue,
kissed it and heated the cool marble with his body.
“Darling stay with me and never leave me alone” ‘ he stammered.
And from that moment the sculpture was his love.
Each day she was waiting for him and every night she lied in his arms.
But it didn’t live however he was dreaming that it was alive.

Afrodite who loves to smile became very sad
when she saw Evangelos pining away.
Such a beautiful man wasting his live
and spoiling his youth and love at a piece of stone.
People create beauty but only gods can create live !

She went to Zeus on the high mountain Olympus.
And while she caressed his hand , she said :
“Dad Zeus, I helped you so many times to gain the godesses you loved”,
“please help me now and let the statue of Evangelos live”.
What’s worser: “A man who dies before it’s time ,or bring a statue into being ?”
Zeus bend his head, his unworldly smelling hair fell in front of his eyes,
the great Olympos shaked.

Zeus personally came down the mountain to the fertile soil
that feeds us all and found the beautiful statue.
Now Zeus understood the man.
He started gentle breating towards the sculpture
untill the lashes trembled and her lips moved.
After that he went back to the Olympus.

Later that afternoon Evangelos came home.
He saw the glow from the sun as a blush on the cheeks ot the statue.
He couldn’t bear the pain anymore.
Moaning and groaning he grabbed his sharpest chisel to kill himself:
“Let me die almighty gods, I don’t want to live anymore”
“All I create is dead and dead is what I touch”.
And he wanted to throw himself to the ground.
But tender lips caressed his hair while warm arms rocked him.
A voice he knew but also not sighed:
“Darling stay with me and never leave me alone”
